NOLAN

I rested on the cot, wishing for Theo. Wishing I smelled her elusive scent that calmed me and reminded me of days when I wasn’t told what a failure I was. God, I missed Theo and I was so damn tired. Why did we have to have a calving season every year?

Yawning, I stretched and then relaxed again, forcing myself to sleep the few hours I had before I was called out to help with a birth or to search for a missing cow. Every year I promised myself we’d have a better system. Every year, something always went wrong. I should know better than to believe I could outsmart nature or the will of a huge beast.

March was proving to be almost as cold as February and a brutal month for calving. Although the days were slightly longer, we’d still lost more calves than we’d like and we had to be vigilant. I’d hoped to have returned home by now to be with Theo, but I knew that wouldn’t be a reality for a while. For too long.

When the door opened, I groaned with relief and opened my arm. “Theo,” I breathed. “I’m so glad you’re here. I need to hold you.”

I thought I heard a snicker, but that didn’t make sense. Theo loved her time with me. Didn’t she?

“Although I thought about cuddling up to you to freak you out, I just can’t,” Caleb said as he chuckled. “Besides, the weight of both of us would ruin that cot of yours and then you’d spend the rest of calving season on the floor.”

I groaned and rubbed at my face. “What are you doing here? Can’t you leave me in peace?” I rested a hand beneath my bent elbow as I propped myself up and stared at him through bleary eyes. If I couldn’t see my wife, I didn’t want to see anyone.

Caleb pulled out a chair and sat near my cot as he looked around the office. “Some things never change. Alessia’s still a slob.”

“She’s not a slob.” I yawned again, my whole body shaking. “She thrives in chaos.”’

Caleb snorted as he stared at her desk. “Call it what you want, that’s a disaster.” He focused on me, and I froze. He rarely visited the ranch during calving season, and he generally came with pizza and thermoses of coffee to bolster my spirit and my flagging energy.

“What’s happened?” I forced myself to sit up although I yearned for sleep. I was getting too old for this crap. How was I only thirty-four? I felt ninety.

“Imagine how tired you’ll be when you have a child and you’re in the middle of a calving season.”

“Stop looking so gleeful.” I rose, stomping around the room as I attempted to wake up. Somehow, I knew I needed to be wide awake for whatever he had to say. He had the air of a lawyer about him, rather than that of my best friend and cousin. “Spit it out, Cay.”

“I saw Theo today. She went into town for groceries.
